Famous Nepali People

I was having a discussion with someone about famous Nepali people and I realized my list was pretty short.  But there must be many out there - media, athletes, professors, business owners etc... Add to the list if you can think of any.

  •  Prabal Gurung - fashion designer
  •  Tenzing Norgay - climber

Tenzing Norgay is controversial one because he chose to be identified as an Indian later in life. The Indian Goverment has an award in his name.

quickly off the top of my head:

Kiran Chettry, CNN Anchor, is half Nepali.

Araniko

Buddha (Kapilvastu)

Sita (Janakpur) - of Ramayana fame

Mahabir Pun won the "Asian" Nobel Prize (Ramon Magsaysay Award)

Kul Chandra Gautam was Assistant Secretary General of the UN

Manisha Koirala - bollywood actress

Udit Narayan - bollywood singer
Denny - bollywood villain
The gentleman who spearheaded Nepal's world renowned Vitamin A initiative (forget the name)

@openak - what is professor lohani famous for?

@biplav - nice list! but (a) who is araniko and (b) any idea why tenzing chose to be identified as indian? and as far as sita, i thought the rayamayana was just a story! and btw my wife has met with mahabir pun - nice guy (but very quiet).

@sthapit - you're surely pulling my leg on Araniko (sometimes spelled Arniko) the famous architect who went to China? Don't know the full story on Tenzing, think the Indian government offered him a nice relocation package to settle in Darjeeling and obtain an Indian passport. That way Indian history books could write that the first person to reach the peak of Everest was an Indian. I read his autobiography a long time ago but don't recall if he touched on the subject. As for Sita, while the Ramayana is embellished, I believe the characters actually existed - not positive though.

+1 for coolgal.

In general I think it would be helpful if people put in what each person is famous for so we're not googling for them :)
