Photography / lecture: the Dusenberry Collection

This Monday evening, we are pleased to invite you to a first-time exclusive screening of a selection of images from one of (Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya) MPP's most prized collections - The Dusenberry Collection.

Harold Lyle Dusenberry (1907-1991) was an American agriculturist who worked in Nepal for six years. At the time, Nepal was just emerging from the Rana regime; a fledging nation trying to come to terms with the rest of the world. Sixty years since then, Nepal is still a fledging nation in many ways, however much has changed, and the Dusenberry Collection of black and white photographs at MPP provides testimony to that.

Dusenberry got an opportunity to work with a wide array of populations, from kings to peasants, businessmen to religious leaders and his collection includes pictures of royal court ceremonies, landscapes, cultural monuments and cultural events, however what set these 'regular' types of images apart, are the images that we have rarely seen, those that illustrate the history of modern agriculture in Nepal. It was at the time Dusenberry was in Nepal- the end of the 50s- that Nepali farmers began to use chemical fertilizers; scores of people were trained in modern agricultural practices, animal husbandry, and agricultural tools.
