What's Up With?

This thread is for all things bizarre, quirky or just plain confusing in Nepal. Start each reply with "What's up with" :)

What's up with cars on rooftops?

No that's not photo-shopped.  I'll leave it up to you to figure out how they got two cars up on their roof.

What's up with so many men in Kathmandu holding hands?

If these guys were in San Francisco there would only be one conclusion to be made.  And those combat boots would have removed all doubt.

What's up with banning pockets for Airline Staff?

A friend of mine sent me a link to this BBC article that talks about how The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has banned pockets for all airline staff in an effort to curb corruption. While I think that this is a creative solution, I can't get past the bizarre nature of it. I can also already see airline staff thinking of ways to continue their ways by wearing jackets that have pockets since they were given trousers without (or some other means). It would be interesting to see how this rule takes shape. I would love to hear what everyone thinks of this.

What's up with all the male worship in Kathmandu?

Today is Teej and while it's cool to see all the women in red walking the streets of Kathmandu no one seems to be questioning the reason for the celebrations.  Which apparently is to honor husbands by fasting all day and going to temples to pray for long lives of their husbands.  Unmarried women celebrate as well by praying for "good husbands".

Nepal needs to look forward and modernize in order to lift ourselves out of poverty instead of celebrating archaic traditions like these.  Anyone see anything good out of celebrating Teej?  I certainly don't.

positive: a brief respite from drudgery & an opportunity to feel solidarity.

I think it's important to keep some traditions alive... I think one should not be obliged to do them but want to do them... carry out and be part of the "teej"
what has celebrating teej have to do with devloping the nation or moving towards progress???

@Astha - I'm fine with traditions, but (a) Nepalis have too many of them and (b) Teej in particular is about male worship. Gender equality (among many other factors) is important if Nepalis want to modernize and join the developing world. How can we hope for equality in the work place or end domestic violence (and Nepal has a very high rate of domestic violence, a lot of which go unreported) if we celebrate traditions like Teej where women worship men?

@dee - an opportunity to feel solidarity, yes, but solidarity of the oppressed celebrating their oppression. It's adding insult to injury.

the 'dar' fiesta and merrymaking is cool, but rest of the teej is plain STUPID!! i'm glad n proud none of my family members celebrate it..

what infuriates me most is:

  • even current generation go for it n actually remain on fasting (got some fb n twitter references, but lets not point at certain individual)

  • even males wish/expect their loved ones to be on fasting (again lots of references in my fb timeline)

  • there's even public holiday *only* for women

if women feel like empowered by this women-only festival -- well that's where the discrimination begins..

fun note (maybe): saturday ('dar' khane din) i was talkin to this gal n asked her if i could come to 'dar' party. c told me (in quite derogatory voice) to come wearing 'saari' n 'chura'! WTF was that?

What's up with no one looking back when driving? I've finally figured out how Nepali drivers are able to stop from going mad driving in the crazy traffic - no one ever looks in the rear-view mirror! All the drivers only look forward and everyone behind can kiss their ass. It's true - I haven't seen a single cab driver ever use his rear-view mirror except to do their hair.

What's up with ambulances being stuck in traffic like everyone else?

Dear God, if I ever need emergency medical attention please don't let me be in Kathmandu, or worse stuck in an ambulance in traffic in Kathmandu.
