Women, gender, and fashion in Nepal - has the country changed?
I first came to Nepal in 2003 and have been coming back frequently over
the years. When I first moved here, I was hyper conscious of how I
dressed, knowing that norms of sexual provocativeness were different
here. Whereas shorts and tanktops were fine in the U.S. and showing
your stomach was considered skanky, the opposite was true in Nepal, so
I was told. Due to how saris fit on women, stomachs often show and
women don't think twice about it.
But in 2009, I think Nepal has
changed. I regularly see women wearing shorts, tanktops, short dresses,
skirts, and more, and, to be honest, I am relieved. I take a lot of
pride and comfort in being able to wear what I think is comfortable and
beautiful. It is so hot here that pants are just not at option. I'd
much rather spend the winters here than the summers, if summers mean
having to cover up and sweat endlessly in the heat. So I'm happy with
the new developments. I no longer feel like people are watching or I'm
being judged.
What are your thoughts on modesty, sex, and gender norms in Nepal? What have you noticed about women's fashion in Nepal? Is it a good
development? Do you women out there feel comfortable wearing whatever
you want?

How high should soil rise in a flower bed? should i leave about 2-4 inches from the soil to the top of the bed or fill the soil all the way up?
